A simplified guide to accommodation ratings
Stars rating scheme as applied by VisitEngland and the AA.
All accommodation may be rated nationally by stars. There are different accommodation types, or designations, and a rating of 1 to 5 stars. Therefore, a hotel awarded 3 stars the rating will be 3 Hotel and for a guest house with 4 stars, the rating will be 4 Guest Accommodation.
To get the most out of your stay and help you choose the accommodation you may want, here's a summary of the rating system:

- simple, practical, no frills
- well presented or well run
- good level of quality and comfort
- excellent standard throughout
- exceptional with a degree of luxury
Gold and Silver Awards
These are awarded to the properties that not only achieve their overall rating but also exceed the expectations within the rating level.
Silver - this award recognises high quality in all areas of the business with very good levels of customer care.
Gold - properties achieving a Gold award will demonstrate exeptional levels of quality, comfort, cleanliness, hospitality and attentive service.
Quality Cumbria Assessment Scheme
Quality Cumbria is the local quality assessment scheme which is unique to Cumbria. It was developed in consultation VisitEngland, to recognise and encourage high standards of accommodation in Cumbria to and ensure they are suitable for the Lake District vistor.
Chartered Accommodation Schemes
Local schemes managed by Cumbria Tourism and Keswick Tourism Association and developed for Lake District visitors, where accommodation signs a guarantee to comply with all legislation and to provide high standards of hospitality and accommodation.
